There is a lot of potential for things to go wrong when you’re moving – accidents, breakages, loss of items being just a few.
The last thing you need once you’ve got through all the hoops and solicitors admin is to carry it all on after you’ve moved, replacing the solicitors with insurers. Or, even worse, having no cover to call on. So the first big question is, do you have contents insurance? And will it cover your possessions when you move?
Reasons your contents wouldn’t be covered
Your policy needs to be read carefully so that you can find out what’s covered and what’s not. Additional cover may need to be taken out for any gaps or exclusions. You also may not have cover if you don’t use a licensed, professional removal company – so while your friends and family may mean well, if they break anything, you’re unlikely to be able to replace it through your insurance. Check that your cover includes any scratches and dents which take place in the move, along with financial documents, valuables, money, and fragile items that aren’t professionally packed.
What do I do if my contents aren’t covered?
If you are using a professional moving company, speak to them about filling in any gaps which may exist in your policy. Your existing insurance company may also be able to add on cover for ‘goods in transit’ or ‘contents to be temporarily removed from the home’.
A contents insurance policy which includes house removals is the most important cover to have in place. This typically includes damage or accidental loss of your contents while they are being moved by a professional company. Make sure you check how much your excess is.
What about when I’m using a professional removals company?
There may be some items that are covered as standard and some that you need to pay extra for cover.
Are you sure your most precious possessions are covered?
Have you had your possessions valued recently? Before you take out a home insurance policy, it’s worth knowing how much they are worth so that you have the correct cover. Some policies may have a limit on items and require you to specify them separately.
Will your old home insurance transfer to your new property?
Yes, if you have an existing insurance policy, you can transfer it to your new home, but you will need to contact your insurer to let them know where and when you’re moving. You will also need to consider any differences between your old and new properties – do you now have a shed, which you didn’t before? You will need to add that to your cover. Does your new place have a security system? That could bring down your premium.
