This is perhaps one of the most stressful times to move that we’ve seen in many years, overshadowed by economic fragility and increasing interest rates, which are scaring the banks and building societies.
If your mortgage is still in place or your new rented home is still waiting for you, then there are many ways you can make the process less stressful.
Don’t take your clutter with you
It may seem obvious to only take what you need, but many people leave a large portion of packing to the last minute, and find that they are taking that drawer of unidentified stuff with them. Of course, moving that comes with an unnecessary financial cost. We recently gave some tips on decluttering, you can find them here.
Moving days are like weddings
Not that many happen on a Tuesday (or Wednesday). This means that you’re more likely to be able to use the removal company or van hire that you wish, rather than settling with a more expensive company.
Before you choose a removal company to help you, it’s worth checking out their reviews and recommendations, and then booking early to ensure you’ve got the one that best suits your needs, rather than the only company available.
It’s also worth bearing in mind that until you have the removal company around to do a survey, the price you are quoted is going to be a rough guide, at best. The survey allows the company to give a more precise estimate.
Be prepared
When moving day comes it’s best to be ready to go, as time will be factored in to a removals company’s quote. If the street where you live now or the one you’re moving to require a parking permit, have it to hand – and it’s even better if you can secure parking outside of your building.
If you can disassemble things like beds, or take the feet off sofas, it will be easier (and quicker) to manoeuvre them out of your home and into the van. Try to remember when these bulkier items entered your home – were doors taken off of hinges to allow space?
Assign roles on the day
If there are more than one of you moving, make sure that not everything falls with one person, and that you’re pitching in to keep everything on track. This could mean making sure that furniture is ready to go and white goods are unplugged, bagging those parking spaces or giving removals staff space to work, as well as cleaning up after everyone. This is especially important if you are a renter hoping to get your deposit back.
