Moving to university

moving to university

A brand new chapter of life, moving to university can be overwhelming, daunting and, let’s not forget – exciting. Whether you are heading to uni for the first time or moving from halls to a house share, here are some things to bear in mind to make the move as smooth as possible.

Documents

In order to get the keys to your new property, you’ll need to take some documents with you. These include:

  • Your acceptance letter. Are you at the right university?
  • Some ID
  • Student finance documents. These include loan paperwork and any other financial agreements pertaining to university

Make your home-away-from-home as comfortable as possible

When it comes to packing, you’ll want to make sure that you don’t take too much, but you have enough to make your bedroom feel like your own space. This could mean books, ornaments and pictures, or maybe even your favourite cuddly toy. Aside from the comforts you will need:

  • Your bedding – duvet and pillows, a mattress protector, to make it feel a bit more like yours
  • Coat hangers – it’s worth not taking for granted that they’ll be there
  • A laundry basket – a nicer way to store worn clothes
  • A lamp
  • An extension lead – just in case the plug sockets aren’t where you need them to be

Kitchen items

If you’re moving into your first year of student accommodation, chances are you won’t know anyone so won’t be at the stage where you are all happy to share kitchen items. With this in mind, you’ll need to bring the usual things needed to eat and drink from, like cutlery, plates, bowls, mugs, glasses, pots and pans. And don’t forget the tupperware.

Bathroom items

The same goes for your toiletries – chances are you won’t be sharing toothpaste, so make sure you bring your own along with everything you need to keep yourself clean and dry.

General cleaning products

If you wanted to be the best housemate ever, make the effort to keep your space clean by bringing cleaning products and bin bags.

Moving to a shared house?

Your items are likely to be bigger if you are moving to a shared house, as your larger pieces of furniture will not come with the property. You may need to bring everything from a bed to a couch, TV to a microwave. Get a full list of what will be there before you move, so you can be prepared. There will be an extra emphasis here to keep your valuables safe here, as while you may have a lockable room door in halls, the same can’t be said for a shared property.

Final moving to uni tips

This is a big one – make sure that you inspect your new accommodation and record and report any existing damage immediately.

How should I pack?

Moving can be quite nerve racking at the best of times, even more so when you are moving in with people you don’t know. With this in mind, it would be good to have a ‘first night’ box with essentials you’ll want to settle in. Space will be of the essence, so try not to pack too much, but don’t leave out the things that will help you to settle in comfortably as soon as possible.
