Preparing furniture for storage

Preparing furniture for storage with Fast Forward Group

Having the extra option of space for things that you need – but that you don’t need right now – can be a huge weight off, especially when you know they will be safe and protected.

Storage space not only offers the security to keep your items safe, but protection from the elements. However, to ensure that your furniture is in the best condition when you need it again, there are some things that you can do to prepare them before they are locked away for a while.

Breakdown and treat

Give all the surfaces of your furniture a clean and consider disassembling larger pieces before storing, so as to better protect surfaces and different sections. If you do disassemble, put all of the screws and bolts you will have undone into a sealable plastic bag and attach them to the furniture. This could be in the drawer of the item, or simply attached with tape. If the furniture you’re storing does have drawers, make full use of it by storing other items in the drawer space too.

If any of your chairs or other furniture feature leather, make sure that they are treated with a leather conditioner prior to storage to keep them in the best condition.

The next thing you need to do is ensure that all the surfaces are dry! No one wants a mildew build up. This is especially important prior to adding layers to your furniture to protect it. Once dry, wrap legs in bubble wrap or cardboard, along with furniture covers/blankets over other surfaces.

Invest in the right packaging

Wherever you can, it’s best to use strong plastic boxes to store your items as they are durable, long lasting and can be airtight, offering an extra level of protection. This is the opposite of choosing to use plastic bags – which should be avoided completely. This type of bag tends to trap moisture, which can cause mould to build up and grow.

You can, of course, use cardboard boxes for your smaller items, but you need to inspect the boxes first. Make sure they are strong and sturdy and up for the job, as well as completely dry and free of any signs of infestation.

Have an inventory list

It’s always reassuring to create an inventory list, so you know what’s where. If items have been in storage for a while, you can forget exactly what you have. Even if it’s just for a short period, having that inventory list will give you that extra bit of reassurance that you know where things are.
