With the snow coming down (a little) and de-icing set to become more of a regular thing for a while, moving home or office in winter becomes a little different to any time of year.
Of course, the weather impacts the driving conditions and the safety precautions that movers need to make with your possessions, but what else is there to think about, on the way?
1. Timing and taking more time
People drive with more caution in adverse weather, which can cause people to drive slower, and there is of course an increased risk of accidents and build up of traffic. At this time of year, the days are shorter, with sundown at around 4pm, so it’s best to plan your move earlier on, if you can, so you aren’t doing too much in the dark.
2. Dress for the weather and comfort
While you will likely use a removal company, unless you are asking them to set up and unpack your new property, you will likely be moving around and lifting a fair bit. Dress for comfort and for changes in temperature between your old property, your car and your new property. Layers are a good idea. Make sure you’re wearing comfortable shoes with lots of grip.
3. Keep your essentials handy
You’re likely to need a snack or a drink throughout the day, so keep those handy. If there’s anything you will really want when you are either moving or settling in, make sure you know exactly where that is. It’s a good idea to have these in a separate bag or box, travelling with you.
For longer moves, pack more food and drink, along with blankets and warmer clothing just in case.
4. Protect your belongings
If you choose to have a removal company handle your move, they will factor in packing materials and wrapping suitable for the weather, to provide extra protection.
5. Protect your floors
While the rain sleet and snow can be a hazard outside the home, the grit and salt that will be put down to clear it will not be great to walk through the place you are leaving or going to. Even without grit or salt, you won’t want to walk through with wet shoes. Put down sheets or blankets to protect your floors, including the stairs. Make sure that you lay them well, without any lips sticking up which may become trip hazards. If you have wooden floors, they can become slippery. Try to discuss the materials you’re laying with your removal company first. These can also be included in your quote.
