One of the main threats to things being in storage is moisture and the growth of mildew and other bad smelling things that are hard to get rid of.
Fabric is most susceptible to these issues, so it’s important to get its storage right.
Put your clothes away
While some may need to put their clothes into storage because they are moving, many people put their clothes in storage by the season, as they may not have room for everything to be in their home, all year round. Clothes are one of the most common items put into storage, and they can be the easiest thing to store, as you probably have everything you need already.
Good air ventilation is key, so the best way to store clothes is to hang them in garment bags or inside wardrobes. If your clothes are more on the voluminous side – from bigger dresses to thick jackets and coats – it’s best to use vacuum-sealed bags. These bags not only slim down bigger items to bring more space, but also offer good protection to materials from any moisture and mould.
How to prepare your mattresses
If you are putting your bed frame in storage, you may well wish to store your mattress with it too, but of course, these two items need very different care and attention.
The first thing to do with a mattress is ensure that it is completely dry and infestation-free. That doesn’t sound very nice, but if you’re storing something with an infestation, then not only will it get worse, it may spread. Once inspected, slowly put the mattress into a plastic mattress protector, then tape up the open und of the mattress bag, ensuring that it is completely sealed inside. This will keep the dust, moisture and dirt out, while your mattress is in storage.
How to store a mattress
If you are putting your mattress into storage yourself, for the majority of mattress makes, it’s important to place it so that it lays flat, rather than on any of its sides, as the shape will become warped with time. However, if you have a mattress that is made out of latex or memory foam, it’s fine to lay it on its side.
It’s important to remember that mattresses have been created to support people, not furniture. It may feel like you’re wasting some of your space, but if you put heavy things on your mattress while it’s in storage, it may not be as comfortable when it comes out.
Even if your mattress came rolled up in a box, don’t roll it up for storage. It won’t preserve it well for re-use and it will likely invalidate your warranty or guarantee with the manufacturer.
