In recent years, there has been lots of talk about life in the office changing, and this isn’t going to be more of that – but it is going to explore what the benefits are.
With those changes, many businesses are facing the trade-off between allowing staff to work flexibly from home, or damaging employee morale through asking them to be in the office. So how do you get the right balance between having an empty office and keeping staff happy? Or trust and productivity? When it comes to office size, big doesn’t necessarily mean better or more successful, especially these days. And when it comes to downsizing office space, there are many perks including staff productivity.
Perks of downsizing your office include:
Saving money
Depending on where you are relocating, downsizing your office space can mean that you will save money on rent, utility bills and service charges. Of course, this isn’t quite the same if you are moving from the countryside to London, for example. Lowering your outgoings can allow your business to be more flexible in other areas of your business. If you would like to downsize without reducing your furniture or office equipment, you can supplement your office space with storage while still saving money.
You keep what you need
Much like moving to a smaller home, when you downsize an office, it allows you to declutter and think about what you really want to take forward with you.
Space for who you need
While it is frustrating to spend out on office space which is underused, in terms of productivity, pressuring staff back into the office is a bad idea. By downsizing, you have the opportunity to say that you are embracing the hybrid work model: you do want to see your staff, but it doesn’t have to always be in this physical space. You are supportive of that work-life balance that many have now become accustomed to.
Streamlined internal environment
With a smaller internal space, your staff will not have as far to navigate to find their way around the building. This can lead to a more focused work environment and an increase in productivity. There is also the potential that communication will improve, as your staff are physically closer to each other… Teams could work together better, as barriers are removed, and bring a spontiniety and innovation to their work that has not been possible before. Of course, there is always the chance that this will go the other way and people may be irritated by the close proximity of their colleagues. While the configuration of an office is not always going to be right first time, its initial set up is changeable, so any issues in the initial stages can be tweaked as you go along. While you will have had a project manager overseeing your move, it’s best to keep them engaged as you go forward so they can help to iron out any issues.
