Top tips for moving home at Christmas

It’s been said that moving home is one of the most stressful life events that we go through. When you combine that with Christmas, it can feel like it’s going to be taken to a whole different level – but it doesn’t have to be.

Here are some of our top tips to help your move go as smoothly as possible over the festive period:

1. Plan to move whatever the weather

While many people may be dreaming of a white Christmas, it wouldn’t be great news on your moving day. It’s not very often that the UK sees snow over the Christmas break, but no matter how unlikely it may be, it’s best to plan for every situation when it comes to the weather. If it gets close to your moving date and it seems that snow is likely, it may be worth seeing if you can reschedule, to make sure members of your removal company don’t get injured or drop your furniture in the less pleasant conditions. If there’s no way to reschedule then make sure you allow extra time for the move to take place – and unpack the kettle first to keep everyone warm!

2. Bring some spare empty boxes

If the weather isn’t on your side, you are going to want to cover and protect your flooring from the slush, snow and dirty shoes being walked through your new home. Laying down some empty cardboard boxes on your floor will help to absorb the mess and prevent staining.

3. Make your Christmas cards work for you

You can save yourself some postage in the long run by sending notification of your new address to your nearest and dearest while sharing your season’s greetings in your Christmas cards.

4. Pack your presents and decorations separately

At this time of year, you’re going to want to know exactly where your tinsel and gifts are, so make sure that they are labelled clearly, and you time it that they are either the first or last thing to be brought in. Do you have any gifts that are breakable or a bauble with sentimental value? It may be best to keep these with you, just in case.

5. Put together a capsule wardrobe

From Christmas jumpers to pyjamas, while you’re settling into your home and preparing for the festivities, it will be easier if you have as little unpacking as possible to do. Just in case you don’t find time to unpack your wardrobe all together, it will be quicker all round if you have a few days of clothes ready for all the family.

6. Take advantage of the Christmas spirit

Many of your friends and family will have time off work over Christmas and may be able to help you to pack, unpack and decorate your home, so why not make the most of it?
