Things can change a lot, when you’re preparing to move, and if there’s anyone that knows that well it’s removal companies, who deal with moving homes and businesses every day.
With this in mind, the majority of removal companies are able to provide an accurate quote based on provisional moving dates, with you finalising the move date closer to the time. It’s worth noting that if the move does fall through, you may still have to pay the removal company for holding that slot for you.
How soon is too soon?
Once you’ve made the decision to move, it’s really tempting to get everything in place and start packing up as soon as possible – including booking your removal company. However, it’s recommended that you book your removal company after contracts have been exchanged, as it’s considered more likely to go ahead, at this stage. If moving dates do change after you have booked, you may be faced with additional rebooking costs.
How late is too late?
Short notice bookings are possible but some days are busier than others, so if you book in advance you are more likely to get the exact date that you need. The recommended booking time is 4-6 weeks before completion but the bare minimum is seven days – at this point it’s best to ring around and see what you can get. Of course, it’s still best to find a company that can move your possessions at a standard that you’re happy with – don’t opt for the first people that are available.
How does the booking date impact payment?
To secure your slot, some removal companies may ask you for a deposit when you book, with the remainder of the balance required at least a week before moving day.
If your chosen removal company is a member of the British Association of Removers, you are likely to need to make full payment in advance; the idea being that it provides extra security to both you and the company that you are working with.
Short notice moves will usually require payment in full on booking.
Don’t forget storage options
If you would like to have full control of your move – or keep your move on track even though it’s last minute – you can define the date that you leave your property without being sure of when you’re moving in, by putting your furniture into storage. Some removal companies will offer a storage service, so you may be able to do everything with just one provider.
