What no one tells you about moving your home

What no one tells you about moving your home

Unless you move properties regularly, you may feel that you’re swept up in preparation then once you’ve moved, you may end up with a list of all the things you wish you had known before.

By then, of course, you’ll then get swept up in settling into your new home. So, here are some of the things that people wish they had known before moving:

  1. Take the time to declutter

You may feel that you did all your decluttering for the photos with the estate agents but did you really, or were they simply put out of view? Sure, you may end up losing time looking at photos from your school days or going through old birthday cards but it will be worth it. And if you clean out things before, you’ll have less to move – and of course, that means less to pay to move.

  1. Know what’s precious to you

Don’t take any chances with your precious items, whether they be jewellery, family photos or craft items made by your nieces and nephews. If you are moving nearby and you have friends or family in the area, you may wish to ask them to give them a temporary home. Otherwise, if you have a lot of special items, you could look in to storage.

  1. Dismantle so you can rebuild

Have you still got the instructions to your flat pack furniture? Or have you tried to dismantle a bed and then rebuild it from memory? As soon as you can, begin dismantling your furniture and make sure that you record how you have done it, so that you can rebuild it easily once it has found its new home.

  1. Create a first box kit

What is the first thing that you’d like to do when you get to your new home? Pop the kettle on? Well you need to know where that is, along with your cups and hot drink of choice. Moving is hungry work, so you may want to know where the snacks are and your phone charger … and you will of course need toilet roll. You may like to get cleaning straight away, to ensure your new home is up to standard when you are getting ready to unpack.

  1. Be kind to yourself

It may take you a while to be completely settled into your new home and you may find that you are working on it for a little while to get it to be exactly how you want it to be, but remember, you can’t do everything in one day. Or even many days. Don’t be too hard on yourself, things aren’t going to be perfect for a while but you are on your way to being somewhere you want to be.

Another way to be kind to yourself is to make sure that you haven’t got too much to deal with, by engaging a removals company, like Fast Forward Group! Please get in touch if we can help.
